The owners of Widdicombe have stuck strictly to the letter of the law in maintaining their drive as private. And actually, this had a positive impact for us for the long loop we had to do to avoid the drive took us through the back garden of this somewhat stately home.

Buildings were just a tad hidden.

The path led through the woods.

It was the season for rhododendrons

A former child at Widdicombe must have had this tree house.

The gardens were very pleasant.

Of course, we didn’t leave the path, but there were colourful specimens right by it.
And the overall view was attractive too.

At about this time, the threatened rain started but in the end it amounted to almost nothing.

I do not know if this was a front or back gate to Widdicombe House, but it was stylish without any OTT lions on the gateposts.

Was this an estate cottage? It has that huge Devon chimney.
In mild drizzle we were heading for Sunnydale!
