To Dartmouth

It was time to leave our campsite and head for home. The rains had cleared and getting tent down and all stowed in the car proved easy enough. We had decided to take the coast road along Slapton Ley, which we stopped at for a final look at true sea.

So this was Strete – still with a sweeping view around Start Bay to the lighthouse at Start Point. Strete is the site of another of the lost villages in this area.

Yes, the weather was a tad gloomy but that completes the sweep around Start Bay, looking towards Combe Point and the rocks – the Dancing Beggars.

There was an explanation board

Let’s highlight a small part of it.

We drove on, past touristy Blackpool Sands and in to Dartmouth.

And there we see Dartmouth’s famous railway station. Why is it famous? Because it has never had a train service! Behind the station, and a river boat trip away, is Kingswear. That was where the trains were. It’s now a preserved railway – but run utterly as a money-making business with no reliance on volunteers. Perhaps British Railways might have seen the opportunity.

And here’s a taster of what Dartmouth has on offer, which we’ll return to next time.
